Russell Kenery is a yachtsman, classic boat enthusiast, and an author of several books. He will not be speaking about the celebrated achievements of Matthew Flinders as a navigator and cartographer; instead he will focus on Flinders’ sailing skills in small boats. Russell will recount three of Flinder’s amazing adventures in open boats that are all the more remarkable because all yachtsmen can connect with them.
Russell’s classic dinghy, TRIM (an ode to Flinder’s pet cat Trim) will also be available for viewing on the evening. She was a lifeboat built in Hobart in 1913 for the steam ferry S.S. ROSNY. The clinker construction is Huon pine on Bluegum stems and keel. Its length is 4.52m, beam 1.68m, weighs 217kg, and has a sliding Gunter sailing rig. TRIM is on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels (ARHV No. HV000596) at the Australian National Maritime Museum.
His books will be available to purchase on the evening for those wishing to read more about Flinder’s lesser known voyages.
